Syntactic Choice from Speaker Intentions

چکیده

Various pragmatic accounts of the functions of alternative syntactic constructions are available, in terms of presuppositions, information structure, or speaker intentions. Following a consideration of some of the various restrictions applying to the use of the alternative syntactic forms, the paper reviews some of these pragmatic accounts. It then proposes a characterisation of speaker intentions suuciently detailed to allow a mapping to syntactic forms. The type of model required to determine these intentions is discussed and seen to have implications for decision making at all levels of natural language generation, not only syntactic choice.

Early Syntactic Bootstrapping in an Incremental Memory-Limited Word Learner

It has been suggested that early human word learning occurs across learning situations and is bootstrapped by syntactic regularities such as word order. Simulation results from ideal learners and models assuming prior access to structured syntactic and semantic representations suggest that it is possible to jointly acquire word order and meanings and that learning is improved as each language c...
